We kept our motorbike one more day so we could explore the sights around Da Nang. Da Nang itself is a strange place with lots of big hotels but no real centre. It has lovely golden sand beaches and we stayed near My Khe beach – a huge golden beach full of foreign tourists sunbathing in the day and full of locals for sunset and afterwards (once the sun’s power has gone).
We headed south to skirt past Hoi An and to the sacred old Cham temples of My Son. These date from the 4th to 9th century and there are people now undertaking some restoration work as the area was bombed during the American War.
Think Angor Wat …….. but on a tiny scale.
Next was the Marble Mountains. We went to a cave called Am Phu inside the Thuy Son Mountain (The Water Mountain). The cave went deep below ground and had some amazing marble carvings.
Da Nang also has its own legend, a The Dragon Bridge which breathes fire and water every Saturday and Sunday evening. A popular site for foreigners and locals alike – glad we walked and didn’t take the bike there as it was rammed!
