When it comes to trying to protect the environment, France seems to be leading the way. In supermarkets all the bags provided for loose fruit are biodegradable, there are sections in most supermarkets to buy nuts and cereals etc by the weight in non plastic bags, there is a chain of supermarket that concentrates on selling loose produce, many local products are stocked in all supermarkets and lots of products being sold here clearly advertise that they don’t use palm oil.
When it comes to recycling everyone takes their own bags to the shops, almost every street has recycling points and our local recycling point even includes a huge composting bin the output of which is used for gardening in the public places of the town.
And what’s more, the recycling points include any packaging (plastic, card, paper, tins) and glass. We certainly don’t seem to be producing much waste at all that we can’t recycle. We also look across the valley to a large hydro-electric power system.
And the locals still shop at the weekly markets with produce from local producers.
Pretty good hey?
These efforts aren’t going to save our planet alone, but it feels like the UK have some way to go to catch up with where France are already. Come on UK – we need action now, not plans for 2020 etc
