We have loved seeing and enjoying a more simple way of life here in Laos. People go to bed when it is dark (unless a wedding or karaoke leads them very much astray) and get up when the cockerals crow. Yes, the people are poor but seem pretty happy.
We love that they use their rotovators as transport (Pete has taken many photographs of this but my favourite was definitely 6 very small children all in a bucket waving to us).
That their food and drink is local, fresh and simple.
This lemon grass tea (or lion grass tea as the menu said) was lovely.
This iced peppermint tea was literally mint leaves infused and then ice and cold water – so fresh!
It makes us happy that kids walk or cycle to school shouting and waving “Sabaidee” as we pass and wave and shout back. And we saw kids recycle plastic bottles to make a swimming floatation device (a piece of rope with four bottles tied to each end).
We love that you can guess someone’s job by the equipment outside their house.
Today we will be renting a lorry inner tube and floating around the island of Don Det in the Mekong River. You don’t get much more simple than that!
