So our days on the Mediterranean Coast haven’t quite been what we imagined when we dreamed of turquoise warm waters, sunshine, snorkelling, soaking up the sun. More dashing out between rain showers, moving our table and chairs to anywhere on the campsite with a ray of sun or out of the wind, trying to make our doors fit tighter to keep out the cold wind at night and doing a daily class of aqua fit in the rain (that part was fun).

We have seen some lovely places but can only imagine on sunny days they would looks so much more impressive.

Monday we waited for the rain to stop and walked to Collioure which is a beautiful port with lovely restaurants and promenades. There is a big fort used by the military and it was cool to see them doing their fitness tests on a floating assault course in the sea.

The town had some lovely old buildings.

Yesterday we drove into Spain along the coast, it was lovely.

We stopped in Banyuls sur Mer and met an Austrian couple who seem to make a living cycling and blogging about it (www.love2.bike). Pete tried to pick up the guy’s bike and could hardly lift it! You can see it here beside the lighthouse.

Today we went to Argeles Sur Mer, a lovely beachside town that must be so busy in the summer. We ate our lunch sheltered in the cab of the van looking at the crashing waves and a couple of tough people fishing off the beach in the rain.

The thunderstorms have been mighty impressive here. The last two nights we have been woken and then kept awake for a few hours by the loud booming claps of thunder blowing around the bay. Monday night Pete decided at 4.30am to move the van out from underneath the trees. Last night you could feel your while body shake with the power of the thunder. We did have a brief conversation at 4.15am with Janet wondering how safe we were sleeping in a small metal box so close to the sea. I think we both pulled our feet in closer away from the metal sides of the van at that point šŸ˜‰

The campsite was quite flooded this morning and we have grown some webbed feet.

Today a stop at Decathlon for more cooking gas also had us tempted with the warmer clothes section – just in case this weather continues. If nothing else, we will need them for Canada!
