So we were acting like Steve the monkey from “cloudy with a chance of meatballs” movie (he basically said everything he saw !! So the drive considered of “Narrow” , “hairpin”, “bloody slow tourists” 🙂 Pete loved the drive as the hire car had some decent poke but the downside of today’s weather was no views because of the mist.
We arrived in Theth and it was much smaller than we’d imagined (although i won the bet that it now had an ATM and a shop – 2 of each infact). After a drive along a dirt road we found our lovely accommodation.
We Opted to go for an hour return walk to a nice waterfall (which weirdly had a WiFi hot-spot, must be for the Insta generation), had a beer at a cute riverside cafe and then just kinda caved in and went to the restaurant next to the hotel. It was a shit meal, as in safe enough but way over priced and pretty bland, our worst meal.of Albania so far.
The next day was a hike that we’d seen pics from our ski colleagues, Matt and Kate’s holiday, the month before, so we were pretty excited. In the end, it was 3 hours up !!! but the views at the pass and all the way up were amazing. We had a picnic at the top of the pass, just enjoying the views, the quiet and the wildlife.
The walk down was less fun, sore legs and knees from battling the scree rocks and still 2 + hours. As it goes, though, we met a couple that made our day look easy !!! They were coming up pushing their fully loaded bicycles!!! Crazy people!
We stopped at a cool little “container” bar for a sunset beer. Then we went to Matt’s food recommendation, at first glance we thought “Jesus this is too posh for our budget” but Matt is a shrewd guy so we believed him. Queue amazing food, great prices and chatting to a beautiful couple from Germany, who had been travelling Albania for 3 weeks in their campervan 😍.
Next day, we drove down to the Blue Eye park and walked a more gentle route to the blue eye waterfall (pete’s legs were protesting though), lunchspot was great, Janet had a 10 min swim in the freezing water.
We watched some Aussie dive bombers who jumped from very high up after asking the cafe owner, who just shrugged and said no-one has before but if you want to !!!!! Feck UK Health & safety 😎 We walked back down and when at the car we met some hitchhikers and gave them a lift ( from Sweden and Spain) they were super happy not to have to do the 1 hour walk along the road. Had a sunset beer, Pete had pizza, Janet had trout fresh from the restaurant river 😍
The drive back was much more scenic as the sun was out, a really great fun road.
We had one massive “Steve” moment as we came across some tourists in a Dakar truck filling the road !!!
We ended up having a smegy lunch by Schroder Lake, which Janet was a bit unimpressed as she wanted a restaurant or cafe, really, but then when a kingfisher landed near us, all was good.
