Upon leaving Stout Grove, just down the road we came across Crescent City a sprawly town with a lovely promenade, parks and lighthouse. First we did a visit to Wal-Mart, which is always a cultural experience. This time we saw a truck with a garden shed built in the back which was for sleeping in – takes all sorts I guess ! Then we had a walk out to the lighthouse and met a lady really keen that we enjoy her home town – she even gave me a hug – I think for good luck to see whales, but I’m not really sure why.

During our evening walk, I may have found the bicycle helmet for me – now I just need a bicycle!

Unfortunately Crescent City also has quite a lot of homeless people, something we are seeing a lot of in towns and cities here. Sad to see so many people doing it tough for whatever reason.

The next morning we drove through a redwood tree in Klamath – well almost, our roof rack was about 2cm too high.

And then onto Redwood National Park. We headed to Prarie Creek Visitor Centre, got some info and lunch and then kitted up for a walk. We headed down to Fern Canyon which said it was 5 miles each way but Strava said 7 miles. Our legs agreed more with Strava. Fern Canyon is beautiful but it took a lot of balance to keep your socks and boots dry on the makeshift bridges of drift wood. I only managed 50% but Pete managed 100%.

The walk there and back was through amazing redwood forest – so cool!

And then we saw a male Roosevelt Elk, with huge antlers – wow! It was breath taking, and also a bit scary, as he definitely knew we were there watching him.

We also saw a banana slug and cyanide milipedes and could hear stellar jays high up in the canopy.

We decided to stay the night at the park campground called Elk Prarie. It was so peaceful and tucked away, just the noise of a stream trickling slowly by us.

The next morning we had a leisurely breakfast of poached eggs – thanks to Claire for showing us how to make the perfect eggs.

What a way to spend the Easter Weekend.
