We rented a moped and, despite the stormy clouds and dodgy weather forecast, took to the roads to explore the island. We went to a waterfall on the East side of the island, called Tranh Stream. By the time we walked up the rocky path to the small falls, we were so hot and sweaty that it didn’t matter that the falls were quite small (it is the dry season), we were going in to cool off. The pool under the falls was just about big enough for a dip to cool off. Coming back down the river we were treated to some local karaoke (they can’t leave home without their speaker) – it sounded like an animal was being strangled.
Then back on the bike we went to the very Southern tip of the island to the best Banh Mi stall yet (belly pork with some sort of oyster sauce combo – yum). And then with our picnic we rode on the brand new cable car (only opened in Feb 2018) which is 8km in length and passes over two islands to the destination island of Hon Thom. It holds a world record for being the longest three cable, non stop cable car over the sea! The journey takes you over fishing villages, a fleet of fishing boats and floating fish farms and is an impressive feat of engineering.
Once on Hon Thom you can see that Sun World is in the process of building a huge resort and attractions like Sentosa Island in Singapore.
However, at the moment it is really quiet with just a shuttle bus service to take you to a beach. At the beach there is all sorts of water sports on offer (for a price) but in the sea is an anchored inflatable assault course you can go on for free. We couldn’t wait!!!
But it looks harder than you think and we had many slips and falls into the sea. Then a load of kids got on and showed us how it is done – including the monkey bars. It was fab fun with them but after about an hour we were both bleeding and shattered so headed back to the cable car with big smiles on our faces.
As the sun was setting we rode back to our resort with just a little shower of rain. We were so lucky considering the weather forecast had been for thunderstorms all day!
