Yesterday we hired some archaic bikes and cycled 2 miles to the start of a trail to a waterfall. The start of the trail began with a river crossing and in the 14km round trip we must have crossed the same river about 40 times – lovely and cooling but how many times did Pete have to complain and stop and clear stones from his flip flops????

We arrived at Mae Yen waterfall and was very glad to see some water flowing in the waterfall, although it wasn’t really enough to swim in. A quick splash and we made the journey in reverse. The camelback was dry so at the trail head we found a cafe for water. They had skim boards to play on and also a slack rope to try. Pete had a go at skim boarding although his gravel rash crashes made it more like skin boarding. On the slack rope we could both make it across the river and back but only holding someone’s hand for support. More practice required me thinks.

After a quick stop for a sunset beer at an outlook bar we had an exhilarating ride back down to town. By this point I had discovered that my bike’s brakes were useless downhill and either did nothing at all or gave out a horrendous squeal making passerby jump and stare while still doing very little to stop me. To make it worse the sole of my shoe had come apart (flapping about like a talking shoe) so it wasn’t very effective on the road to slow me down either. I decided we should go straight to return the bikes to the hire shop where the lad just laughed when I told him that the brakes were dangerous on hills. That’s customer service for you!

Last night we followed the dance music and ended up in Pai Circus Hostel – we may be back!
